5 Benefits of LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK

LASIK is a type of eye correction procedure that can improve your eyesight and may be able to help you get rid of your corrective eyewear. This is an FDA-approved procedure that has been shown to be quite safe and effective over the years since it was approved for use in 1998.

It Improves Your Vision

LASIK is done primarily to reshape your cornea, which can, in turn, improve your vision. In fact, many LASIK patients have good enough vision to go without glasses or contacts in the future. Nearly all patients end up with vision of at least 20/40 while approximately 85 percent of patients receive 20/20 vision. With one simple procedure that usually takes approximately 10 minutes per eye, patients can experience a lifetime of benefits.

It Is Painless

While many of our patients are nervous about being awake while having their eyes operated on, we find that nearly all our patients are pleased with how their procedures go. We give you anesthetic eye drops prior to the procedure that will numb your eyes. Therefore, during your LASIK surgery, you should only feel pressure but no pain.

It Can Be Done without Blades

Although older LASIK surgery models always used blades, newer LASIK models are called all-laser or blade-free. With this type of procedure, the laser is used for all parts of the treatment, including the making of the corneal flap. This can decrease discomfort and lessen recovery time although either LASIK option is just as safe as the other.

It Has a Quick Recovery Time

After your procedure, you will need to have someone drive you home, and you will need to plan to rest for the next 24 hours, avoiding many activities. You will probably notice that your vision is somewhat improved immediately after surgery, but it may take you several weeks of healing before your vision is completely changed. Within a week, you can begin wearing eye makeup again.

It Can Provide Permanent Help

Most of the time, the effects of LASIK are permanent. However, in some cases, individuals may need a repeat procedure if their eye prescriptions have changed enough due to age. Permanent results can improve visual acuity, night vision and peripheral vision as well.

As with many other procedures, LASIK may not be the right choice for everyone. For example, if you have been diagnosed with macular degeneration or cataracts, your doctor may recommend that you stick with contacts or glasses. We can help you know if LASIK is right for you and plan a customized treatment for you during a consultation at Wichita Vision Institute. With our help, you may be able to achieve 20/20 vision once again and leave your glasses and contacts behind forever. Contact us today!
