Dr. Patel Treats Man Injured by July 4 Fireworks

On the evening of July 4, Dr. Patel received an emergency call about a local man who had been injured when a firework exploded in his face, blinding and deafening him. Shrapnel lodged itself in his eyes, cheeks and forehead and his eyes were swollen shut when he arrived in excruciating pain at Wichita Vision Institute. Dr. Patel had to perform several procedures to remove gunpowder from his corneas, and the man could have suffered serious vision loss. He was not the only one harmed by a firework, as Wichita fire officials received about 70 calls that day for firework-related injuries.
