What is LASIK Eye Surgery?
LASIK eye surgery is a procedure done to correct defects in the cornea that lead to vision problems like astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. During the procedure, eye care professionals such as our own Dr. Patel cuts a small flap in the eye to access the cornea. They then reshape the cornea with a cornea and replace the flap over the eye, which gradually heals.
Wichita Vision Institute also offers a customized version of bladeless LASIK surgery called Custom IntraLase LASIK. In this procedure, Dr. Patel makes a blueprint of the patient’s eye with a computer and uses that blueprint to tailor the procedure to meet the patient’s needs.
What does cataract surgery involve?
A cataract is a condition in which the lens of the eye clouds over. It is the world’s most common cause of blindness. In cataract surgery, Dr. Patel will remove the defective lens and replace it with an artificial lens called an IntraOcular Lens or IOL.
Next, Dr. Patel will use an ultrasound device to break the defective lens into several pieces. They will use a suction device to remove those pieces. She will place the IOL in the patient’s eye and position it properly before closing the incision and placing a protective shield over the patient’s eye.
Wichita Vision Institute offers several different types of IOLs. The monofocal IOL is the oldest type and corrects vision at only one distance: far, near, or in-between. It is often used for patients who still have good distance vision but weaker near vision. The multifocal IOL can correct several different distances and is often recommended for patients with presbyopia, an age-related condition that impairs a patient’s ability to focus on nearby objects. The toric IOL helps patients with astigmatism.
What is macular degeneration?
The macula is a pigmented area near the retina’s center that controls the patient’s central vision. Macular degeneration is a condition that causes the macula to break down. There are two forms: dry and wet, with the latter being the more severe and less common. The patient’s treatment will depend on the type of macular degeneration they have and its severity.
For example, Dr. Patel can treat a patient with wet macular degeneration with special medications to prevent the further growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina. Some dietary supplements can help reduce a patient’s risk of developing macular degeneration.
